World 1-37: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
~SNES

Super Mario RPG was my very first Role Playing Game, and I can't think of any better game to have started the genre with. It's easy to get the hang of, features the same familiar characters from all the Mario series, and also introduces a couple cool new characters who could have gone on to have their own careers, but sadly did not.

Super Mario RPG is a great game on so many different levels. First of all, you can roam around like many other Mario games, except this time you have three dimensions to explore. It's almost impossible to lose sight of your current goal, and even if you do happen to forget what you were supposed to be doing, you can always stop by Tadpole Pond and have a chat with Frogfucius and he will give you a hint. There are tons of side quests and mini games to indulge in along the way, such as the Grate Guy Casino and even a Final Fantasy-esque boss named Culex. There are also some cameos of other famous Nintendo characters. All in all, Super Mario RPG is an incredible game that anybody and everybody should play. Super Mario RPG is also relatively short for an RPG (I didn't write down my time, but I think it was something like 7 hours), so even if you aren't a huge fan of the genre, you should definitely check this game out.
