World 1-77: Deadly Neighbours

Deadly Neighbours

Right out of the gate in Deadly Neighbours, you can customize your three characters (referred to as your family in game). You can pick all sorts of creative designs for the hair, eyes, clothing, and other things, all nicely designed in the distinct Nerdook style. All three characters start with two seemingly random weapons, which you will use to attack your neighbours in a quest to repay the loan shark you borrowed $25,000 from in order to purchase your house in this lovely neighbourhood.

Using action points awarded at the beginning of each turn, you must decide your course of action for each family member. By clicking on a weapon, you will select it for use for that turn. There are environmental items that can be laid on the ground, which can affect you or your enemies. Fire is a good example, which burns anybody who walks over it. At the end of each level, you can pick a weapon dropped by your slain enemies to give to a family member, or dump it in a spare storage area for later use. You can also unlock perks, reaching more and more according to how much money you gain throughout the game. Perks can be used on each family member to upgrade stats, such as the "Stone Skin" perk, which adds +10 HP to that family member, or "Quick Feet" which makes that member immune to slippery surfaces and allows them to jump twice as high.

There is also a pretty cool mini-game called "Deadly Drive" where you use your mouse to move a van up and down along a side-scrolling street, mowing down all your neighbours while avoiding pylons. There are also 12 Stamps you can collect, which is really just another term for "achievements."

All in all, Deadly Neighbours is a seemingly simple game that takes awhile to master. I never did figure it out that well, but it made for an alright play. However, I am sure there are other people out there who would be much more interested in it than I was.
